There are two live webcams setup for the Large Hadron Collider. I can’t help but be fascinated. It’s tempting to sit in front of them and wait for a giant black hole to swallow the Earth or something. Yeah, yeah, I know it’s impossible… or is it?

And what would you see?
For some reason, this reminds me of the legend of the disposable PDP-11s used in testing underground nuclear blasts. Rumor had it that the gummint would install a PDP-11 with a long cable going into the hole and run time-domain reflectivity to determine the size of the blast. Basically, they’d watch the cable get eaten by the blast and determine the strength of the blast by how quickly the cable got eaten. Difficulty being that they couldn’t position to the PDP-11 *far enough* away, so the PDP-11 would get destroyed, too.
