Watch Eboshi for motivations; watch the women of Iron Town for their attitudes, particularly toward the men of Iron Town; watch it subbed. At least, those three things were the grounds for the last three arguments I’ve had over the film.
More importantly, watch it for wonder – this isn’t Spirited Away, but it has its moments.
Watch for what happens to the crystal dagger, which in Japan is a symbol of undying love, given like a wedding ring in ‘barbarian’ tribes. The hair is important as well, but not quite as simple to explain. And try to see the different places that Ashitaka’s arms aim at… It’s hard to describe it in a way that makes sense without spoiling it.
So… the reaction is stunned silence, then?
